You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover #330

- You can't judge a book by its cover - which is very true.
But you can like one cover version better than another...

US cover
UK cover
John Grisham has a new legal thriller - A Time For Mercy -
coming out this fall. It will be the third book to feature Jake Brigance from A Time to Kill. And I will most likely listen to it - I do enjoy his legal thrillers. The US cover is on the left and the UK cover is on the right. I like the starry sky on the US and the isolated road cutting through the woods. But what is that flare of light? My guess would be fire. The UK cover has an even more isolated road with - yep, you guessed it - a cabin with a light shining out of a window. Dark, cloudy sky included. I'm going to go with the US cover this week. The sky sold me. What about you? Which cover do you prefer?
Any plans to read A Time For Mercy?

You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover #148

I haven't read Brad Parks yet, but his forthcoming book looks pretty good - so it's been added to that teetering TBR pile. The US cover is on the left and the UK cover is on the right. Both versions have nabbed some high profile authors for cover blurbs. Both have 'in your face' white title lettering that's a bold font. I do find the UK cover a bit lurid, but it leaves no doubt that a child in danger is part of the plot. I think I am more drawn to the US cover this week. The red is eye catching, I like the shadows on the title and I am wondering about that house at the end of the road. What about you? Any plans to read Say Nothing? Which cover do you prefer?

You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover # 146

Matthew Quick's new novel, The Reason You're Alive releases in the US on July 4/17 and the UK a week later. The Independence Day release date seems tailored to fit the premise of the book. "The New York Times bestselling author of The Silver Linings Playbook offers a timely novel featuring his most fascinating character yet, a Vietnam vet embarking on a quixotic crusade to track down his nemesis from the war. Through the controversial, wrenching, and wildly honest David Granger, Matthew Quick offers a no-nonsense but ultimately hopeful view of America’s polarized psyche." The US cover is on the left and the UK cover is on the right. Truthfully, I have no idea what the colours on the cover are meant to convey. Confusion? Camouflage? Art? I can say that if it wasn't Matthew Quick's name on the cover, I would not even pick the book up. For me, the cover doesn't invite the reader in. So, it's a draw for me this week - I dislike them both equally. What about you - any plans to read The Reason You're Alive? Which cover do you prefer?

You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover #108

- You can't judge a book by its cover - which is very true.
But you can like one cover version better than another....

US cover
UK cover
Well, I can never get enough of thrillers! Two very different looks for Shari Lapena's forthcoming book The Couple Next Door. The US cover is on the left and the UK cover is on the right.  An easy choice for me this week - UK. I know that's a woman's silhouette on the US cover, but it's too dark and somehow just too messy for me. And that line of type under the word door and above the author's name almost looks like fangs. I like the colour of the UK cover, the rainy glass wiped away looking at another house and as always, a great tagline. Which cover do you prefer? Any plans to read The Couple Next Door? You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover #11

US/Canadian cover
UK/Australian cover
I was hunting down cover art for Neely Tucker's debut novel - The Ways of the Deads - and came across the US/Canadian cover on the left and the UK/Aussie cover on the right. I prefer the North American cover this time. For me, it captured more of the girtty inner city feel of the book. The UK /Aussie version also connotes grimness with the gray. But I have to admit, I didn't realize it was a bird on the wire at first glance. My first thought was tightrope walker! Either way, it's a really good read! Which cover do you prefer? Have you read The Ways of the Dead?

UK cover
US/Canadian cover
I was hunting down cover art for Laline Paull's debut novel - The Bees - and came across the US/Canadian cover on the left and the UK cover on the right. I prefer the North American cover this time. For me, it captured more of the 'hive' feel and the queen bee is quite prominent. If you're squeamish about insects though, you might prefer the UK cover! Either way, it's a really good read!
Which cover do you prefer? Have you read The Bees?

US cover
Canadian cover
I was hunting down cover art for Emma Healey's book - Elizabeth is Missing, and came across the US cover on the left and the Canadian cover on the right. I'm torn this time! The US cover gives off an ominous vibe that promises a good suspenseful read. But the Canadian cover is a note - a note that the main character refers to often. This week I can't decide. But what I can tell you is this - get your hands on a copy of this book. It's really, really good! Watch for my review on June 24. What cover do you prefer? Have you read Elizabeth is Missing? US/Canadian cover
UK/Australian cover
I was hunting down cover art for Rainbow Rowell's latest book - Landline, and came across the US/Canadian cover on the left and the UK/Australian cover on the right. I prefer the North American cover this time. That yellow phone grabs your attention. There's way too much going on with the UK cover - too many blurbs. It's just too busy. Either way though, it's a good read.
What cover do you prefer?
Have you read Landline?

US/Canadian cover
UK/Australian cover
I was hunting down cover art for Lisa O'Donnell's latest book - Closed Doors, and came across the US/Canadian cover on the left and the UK/Australian cover on the right. I prefer the US cover this time. Both capture the tone of the book, but I think the boy peeking through the door conveys the story inside better. And I always like to imagine what a character looks like instead of being presented with a ready made image.
Either way - it's a good read. (my review)

US/Canadian cover
UK/Australian cover
I was hunting down cover art for Jacqueline Winspear's new book - The Care and Management of Lies and came across the US/Canadian cover on the left and the UK/Australian cover on the right. I actually prefer the UK cover this time. Both capture the tone of the book, but I think the UK cover does it better with the larger and more descriptive pictures. Either way - it's a good read. (my review)
What cover do you prefer? Have you read The Care and Management of Lies?

North American cover
UK/Australian cover
I was hunting down cover art for Jeffery Deaver's new book - The Skin Collector and came across the US/Canadian cover
 on the left
and the UK/Australian cover on the right.
The font on the NA cover ties in more with the plot line, but I prefer the colours used in the UK version.
What cover do you prefer? Have you read The Skin Collector yet?

North American cover
United Kingdom cover

I was hunting down the cover art for this week's post of Jo Nesbo's latest book, The Son, and came across the US/Canadian cover on the left and the UK cover on the right. Myself, I prefer the NA cover - it just seems darker and more ominous. The UK cover seems like one I've seen before. I've read the book and loved it, and think that the NA cover captures the story better as well.

Which cover do you prefer? Have you read The Son?

Harlan Coben's newest book, Missing You, is on my teetering TBR pile.
I'm really looking forward to another of his suspense filled
thrillers.
For me, the North American cover on the left
seems to hint at that better than the Australian cover on the right.

Which cover do you prefer? Have you read Missing You?

Which is very true. But you can like one cover version better than another...

I was hunting down the cover art for this week's post on Natchez Burning by Greg Iles and came across the U.S. cover on the left and the
Canadian/UK cover on the right.
The Canadian cover gives you a good idea of what the book has in store with that burning cross. But I prefer the American cover. I thought the heavy leaden sky and the red simmering over the town was more effective.

Which cover do you prefer? Have you read the book yet?
