Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital

I'm a big fan of James Dashner's Maze Runner series of books. Last year's movie release of the first book was really well done in my opinion. I've been waiting to watch the second book to movie - Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Christmas vacation was the right time! Now, would it be as good? For this viewer, the answer is yes!

Fox Home Entertainment has just released the Blu-ray/DVD combo on December 15th.

Now, I'm just going to say right up front - if you're looking for the movie to be absolutely faithful to every incident/plot point in the book you're going to be a bit disappointed. But if you're looking to be entertained and on the edge of your seat for the entire 129 minutes, well, you're going to love it.

Scorch Trials picks up right where Maze Runner left off. I was immediately re-immersed in the story. Familiar (but not many) faces from Thomas's glade are back, having found safety at the end of the first movie. (This is a great ensemble) But have they found safety? Still running, the gladers are thrust into the Scorch - a no man's land of ruined cities of the past, heat, sand and cranks......those who have the Flare - a zombie like illness. I gotta tell ya - those with the Flare in this movie were infinitely more terrifying than the zombies from The Walking Dead. There's a lot of scary in the Scorch Trials - from the creepy undergrounds, to the abandoned buildings, but especially those infected. I had a couple of jumpy, heart tripping, gotcha moments.

The sense of danger, the pacing, the what-next, made for an edge of your seat viewing. The Scorch Trials does have more of an 'adult' feel to it than The Maze Runner - there's more overt violence and some more 'adult' situations (the drunken dance party for example). And of course, there's lots of running - lots and lots of running - from cranks, from WCKD (yep what you thought at the end of the last movie - rethink it.) and from danger of many sorts, sizes and shapes. 

There were lots of extras included as well - audio commentary, gag reel, deleted and extended scenes, added videos, documentary, visual effects and more.

So, yes I've read the books. And yes, there are differences. And no, it doesn't upset me at all. I thought The Scorch Trials was wonderfully entertaining. And yes, I can't wait for the release of The Death Cure movie, coming in February 2017. Check out the trailer for The Scorch Trials below.

Paper Towns - Review And Giveaway

I have a great fondness for 'teen' movies. And movies made from great YA books. Paper Towns is the second John Green book to make it to the big screen. "

I thought Wolff played a great 'geek', an innocent just discovering the first of many things in the countdown to the end of high school. Delevingne has a lovely gravelly voice and a manner about her that suggests a mystery. They were great choices for the lead character. There was a fun cameo from Ansel Elgort too!

When I first read the book, I was fascinated by the idea of Paper Towns - yes it's a real thing, not a catchy made up title. There are a few differences from book to movie, but none that detract at all.

And although Green is a young adult writer, there are lots of truths in his books for anyone and everyone....

"You have to get lost before you find yourself." "Maybe we all won't win the lottery or marry royalty or make that last minute shot. But that doesn't mean we won't have amazing adventures, meet exceptional people and make indelible memories."

Film on Friday #26 - If I Stay

I always have some doubts when a wonderful book is made into a movie. Will it stay true to the book? Will the actors embody the characters? Will I still love the book after watching the movie? 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has just released the Blu-ray/DVD of If I Stay. And let me put your mind to rest right away - it was very well done.

If I Stay is based on the best selling YA novel by Gayle Forman. After a horrific accident Mia is stuck between here and there, life and death, staying or going.....and has to make a choice.....

We get to remember and re-live Mia's life up to this point. She's a gifted cello player with a promising future, a boyfriend she loves dearly and a wonderful family.

Chloe Grace Moretz plays Mia, and she was a great choice. She absolutely personified the mental image I had created for this character. She's engaging and believable. Keep your eye on Moretz - we're going to be seeing much more of this talented young actor.

Jamie Blackley plays boyfriend Adam. I did think some of his scenes were overplayed.  The supporting cast is stellar, especially Mia's family. (Stacy Keach as Gramps was great)

Music plays such a huge part in the book and with the movie it comes to life.  The soundtrack is really good and the playing is believable, both for Moretz, Blackley et al. (Adam is a rock musician who plays the guitar). Moretz's cello playing and love of music was really, really well done. As was Blackley's, but Adam's head banging with every last chord was also a bit overdone.

If you love YA, teen romances or hey, just a good movie, you'll enjoy If I Stay. (Especially if you loved The Fault in Our Stars.)

Film on Friday #21 - The Fault in Our Stars

When a well-loved book is adapted as a movie I always wonder if the film can live up to my expectations.  In this case, it's John Green's fabulous book, The Fault in Our Stars. I didn't get to the theatres to see it, so I happily sat down with the newly released The Fault in Our Stars Little Infinites Blu-ray.

Director Josh Boone's vision of the book was excellent! For those of you unaware of either book or movie (and how can that be!) The Fault in Our stars is the love story of Hazel and Augustus - who meet at a teen cancer group. Actors Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort both did an amazing job bringing these characters to the screen. Supporting actors Laura Dern and Sam Trammel also embodied the mental images I had created for Hazel's parents. Woodley and Elgort nail the sarcastic dialogue, the poignant scenes and the 'get the tissue box moments' (seriously you're going to want to have that handy) and made me fall in love all over again with this story.

There are so many great scenes and lines from the book that stuck in my head as I was reading and I wondered if they would appear in the movie. They did - including my personal favourite - "Some infinities are bigger than other infinities." This Blu-ray edition is actually called the Little Infinities Extended Edition (and comes with a limited edition little infinities bracelet) The Fault in Our Stars tackles a serious topic with humour, grace, wit and so much emotion. It's impossible not to love the story.

Although I loved getting lost in watching the movie, I was also eager to see the additional features included - an extended version, deleted scenes (including a cameo cut from John Green), features on the cast, the process of taking a book to a movie and many more.

Is it a movie I would watch again? Absolutely. Definitely recommended to movie and book lovers - one of the best book to film adaptions I've seen.

Film on Friday #13 - The Book Thief

I look forward to seeing movie adaptions of books I've enjoyed. But there's always the question of comparison. Will the movie measure up to a beloved book?

The Book Thief is newly released on DVD and Blu-ray from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Director Brian Percival had a challenge on his hands to bring Marcus Zusak's bestselling The Book Thief' to the big screen. My opinion? He did a great job.

 For those who haven't read the book (and why haven't you!?) The Book Thief is the story of foster child Liesel, who lives in Nazi Germany in 1939. When she arrives at her new home, she cannot read. But she learns with the help of her new father. Her love of books grows as her things around her deteriorate. She 'borrows' books from a wealthy couple's library to share with her neighbours - and the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

There are some differences, (a few less characters and a few things happen in a different manner) but for me, there were no major ones that detracted from Zuzak's original story.

I thought that Sophie Nélisse was wonderful as Liesel.  Performances by Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson, as Liesel's parents, were just as standout. Their presentation  fit the mental images I had created of the character.

I knew the story going in - and the end - but I was captured from the first scene to the last. The Book Thief movie let me experience this wonderful tale all over again. And I cried all over again - so fair warning, have your tissues ready. Very well done in my opinion.

The story covers the arrival of Christopher Columbus through President Clinton and gives a detailed analysis of important US events through history.

Malcolm X

In the 1992 Spike Lee directed, Denzel Washington in the lead role heads Malcolm X. Malcom X is a biopic of the controversial and influential Black Nationalist leader. The film tells the story of the life of the human rights activist from his birth in 1925 until his assassination in 1965.

Gandhi

Ben Kingsley took on the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the 1982 Richard Attenborough directed biopic of one of the most famous men and stories in history. The film tells the story of the lawyer who became known for using his philosophy of non-violent protest to become the leader of the Indian revolts against the British rule.

Passion of the Christ

Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ focuses on the last twelve hours of the life of Jesus including the betrayal and the crucifixion. The film begins in the Garden of Gethsemane as Jesus is arrested, tried and sentenced to death by crucifixion. The depiction of the Biblical tale went on to be nominated for three Academy Awards®.

America: The Story of the US

This six-part mini series from 2010 presented the history of America over the past 400 years. The series examined how humans harnessed technology to advance their progress as part of the human race, taking in events spanning from the English settlement in Jamestown in 1607 through to the present day. With narration by Liev Schreiber, events are recreated by a combination of actors and CGI technology.

The Prince of Egypt

This film from 1998 tells the story of Moses, a Hebrew who becomes an Egyptian Prince, flees Egypt, and returns to free the Hebrew people. With an all-star cast consisting of Val Kilmer, Danny Glover and Ralph Fiennes, this Biblical tale won an Academy Award® for Best Song for the Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston duet ‘When You Believe’."
